The city of Cáceres is an urban settlement dating back to the Middle Ages and it contains one of the most comprehensive collections of Renaissance architecture in the world. For this reason, the city was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986. The Parque Nacional de Monfragüe (Monfragüe National Park), locatedin the province of Cáceres, extends over 18,396 hectares to either side of the Plasencia-Trujillo road and is the only protected area in Extremadura. The landscape of the park is incredibly diverse, with rivers, woods, scrubland, pasture and a wide range of flora and fauna. The area has been protected as a natural park since 1979, and was granted national park status in 2007. The park has also been recognised as a Biosphere reserve by UNESCO since 2003.
